Mira Costa’s boys tennis team defeated the defending CIF Division 1 Champions Los Alamitos High School 10-8 at Los Alamitos on Wednesday in a non-conference match, with top performances by senior singles player Alex Gaal and senior doubles player Jeremy Chung and sophomore Evan Fortier.

Costa faltered in the beginning of the match, but stayed strong towards the end. Chung and Fortier fought through pressure, winning both of their sets 6-3 and 6-2. In singles, Gaal defeated his opponent winning his set 6-2. According to Fortier, Los Alamitos was a tough opponent.

“They had a lot of really tough players,” said Fortier. “I was proud of everyone for competing so well and I think the key was being focused.”

The Mustangs are currently 2-0 overall. The team’s next match will be at Beverly Hills High School on March 8. According to Coach Ciasulli, this match was a tough one for Costa.

“The match was extremely close,” said Ciasulli. “We got stronger as the match continued and the pressure mounted.”
