Mira Costa’s 16th annual all media art show was another spectacular display of Costa’s students expressing their creativity and passion through mixed media such as drawings, paintings, photography, fashion, and sculptures.

Students were able to submit art pieces of all kinds into the show through Mira Costa’s art department. The show was held at the Manhattan Beach art center, on display for the entire community. Winners were placed 1, 2, and 3 places in categories of their mixed media art and an overall winner.

The overall winner award was given to junior, Kendal Dragotto for her mixed media piece. The art incorporate an original technique that included wood, nail, thread and yard. The self portrait was an innovative, detailed idea and captured people’s eye.

The 1st place drawing, ‘Distortion’ by Lindsay Thomasson, 11th grade was an immediate attention grabber. Intricate shapes and lines accentuated the drawings use of watercolors. Showcasing how gifted the artist is.

With that said, the abundance of drawings and paintings they did have were spectacular. A majority of them contained an array of colors that helped them stand out and draw people towards them. Each piece was totally uniqueness making each artwork intriguing to look at.

One of the shows biggest strong suits was the detail in each and every one of the pieces. Most looked like they had taken lots of time to complete, and their best efforts were given. This was reflected in the student’s art, and certainly paid off.

Also incorporated in the mixed media were sculptures. The sculptures had to be the biggest disappointment in the show. Most of them were small vases or pots, with little color, making none of them really stand out. In addition, some looked rushed, sloppy, and unfinished, making the area look unprofessional.

Photography was another form mixed media in the show that disappointed. The photography was merely simplistic and boring. One of the photos in the show was a polaroid of what it looked like to be someone sitting in a chair caught off guard. The photo lacked interest and was too boring that it made it a dull picture.

A majority of the art was just drawings and paintings, with only a handful of mixed media pieces. The show would have benefitted from more mixed media artwork since that is the whole concept of the show.

Overall, it was made very clear that Costa’s students are no doubt full of artistic talent and dedication to their work. The 16th Annual Art Show was another great turn out and the art was imposing.

The art show is held at the Manhattan Beach Art Center and can be seen until the 30th.
