Wind ensemble, symphony orchestra, and vocal ensemble will perform their third annual Prism Concert on Oct. 21 in the Mira Costa Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Orchestra director Peter Park feels that the united performance by Mira Costa music groups will be a successful concert.

“This Prism Concert is an opportunity to present a polished program including the three musical groups. We hope to improve our track record, grow from the experience, and hope that the audience enjoys the pleasure of listening to three musical groups,” Park said.

According to Park, the pieces that the symphony orchestra will perform at the Prism Concert are carefully chosen on what he feels will benefit the students.

“I must choose a program that has music that has enjoyable aspects that offer an experience for students. I like to strive for flow, and I want to showcase different styles and give students opportunity to see these things,” Park said.

Wind ensemble will be performing the second movement of “Bernstein’s Symphony,” “Jeremiah Profanation,” which is based on the biblical story of Jeremiah, “Irish Tune” from County Dairy, and “No Easy Wheels of Joy.”

“I thought about different pieces, and I ended up choosing “Irish Tune” because it is very famous and a challenging piece to play. This piece cannot be played without it being beautiful, and I knew my students could tackle this challenge,” band director Joel Carlson said.

According to performers, the upcoming concert is one to look forward to because it is different from normal concerts and it gives them an opportunity to get more experience performing in a large group.

“I can’t wait until the Prism Concert. I really love performing with the three musical groups because it is a different and exciting experience that I look forward to every year,” sophomore vocal ensemble member Maurice Welch said.

Carlson feels that the Mira Costa musical groups can handle big performances like the Prism Concert and hopes his students will rise to the challenge again. He is confident that the concert will be a success.

“Ensembles are ready to tackle a performance like this; they have mastered the fundamentals. They can make beautiful things happen. This concert started three years ago, and it is another opportunity to put on a show,” Carlson said.
