Sixty out of 88 members of Mira Costa Model United Nations won awards at a conference at Edison High School on Oct. 16.

Ten Mira Costa students won the best delegate awards, 26 members won outstanding delegate awards, and 24 members won commendable delegate awards in their respective committees. The Mira Costa Model UN team as a whole won the award for the best school at the conference.

“We competed against other high schools such as Mission Viejo, Cerritos and Huntington. Sophomores, juniors and seniors all participated, and everyone played a role in helping us achieve our goal of winning best school,” junior Mia Haas-Goldberg said.

On Nov. 14, the Mira Costa Model UN team will participate at UCLA.

“Since we aren’t taking a fall trip this year, this conference has a lot of meaning. This will be our last real college conference until our travel trips. We are taking 105 students,” Model UN adviser Bob Timberlake said.

Later this year, students will travel to participate in conferences in Chicago, Berkeley, and New York.

“Judging on our performance at Edison, this is going to be a great year for Model UN,” secretary general Selena Feliciano said.
