Redondo Beach hosts 39th annual Super Bowl 10k/5k run

Runners wait for the start of the Super Bowl 10k run in Redondo Beach on Feb 5th. The run commenced Super Bowl Sunday as it brought the community together to enjoy the day of the worlds greatest sporting event.

Redondo Beach hosted the 39th annual Super Bowl 10k/5k Run that included a 10k, a baby buggy 10k,  a 5k, a costume contest, and a first ever kids 1k on Feb. 5 starting on Harbor Dr and Portofino Way.

The race featured a health and fitness exposition that was free to the public. The event provided booths and stands for local businesses and companies to sell food and goods to attendees.

“The Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K and 5K features a health and fitness expo to give participants the latest in fitness accessories and nutrition,” Spectrum Sports Management and Health and Fitness expo manager Katie Bergsma said. “By focusing on health and fitness, the expo inspires a healthy active lifestyle.”

The 5k race course started on Harbor Dr. and Portofino way and went north to take a right on Herando St., then right on North Francisca Ave. and keep south until Ruby St. in Redondo, where you take a right and run all the way back north to the start.The 10k race starts on Harbor Dr. and Portofino way and went north to take a right on Herando St., then right on North Francisca Ave., keep south until Vista Del Mar, turn right and go all the way back north the start.

“The race was extremely fun especially since it was a beautiful course that finished right by the water as a little bit of rain drizzled down,” Costa sophomore Joao Soares said. “Overall it was a great experience as I got to run with friends and enjoy what I love doing.”

This year there were over 8,000 participants in the races. This is the first year a kids 1k was held in order to accommodate for everyone in the family at any age of walking ability, Bergsma said.

“This event brings the community together in a healthy and fun way by allowing all members to participate whether through running, walking, spectating or even volunteering,” Bergsma said. “By including the 1K Kids Run to this year’s event, there was a race for everyone in the family.”   

The 10k’s first place winner David Cardona ended the race with a time of 32:09, beating second place Stewart Harwell by 74 seconds. The 5k’s winner was Austin Van Biezen with a time of 16:22 and the 10k Baby Buggy winner was Scott Rickert with a time of 37:19.

“Although I might of got 41st overall, the race was extremely fun and I think I ran well,” Soares said. “One day I’ll be able to keep up with the top times if I continue to work hard and have my friends push me every race.”
