The boys varsity wrestling team opened its season on Dec. 4 at West Torrance in the Warrior Invite. The tournament included teams from West Torrance, Torrance, Carson, Imperial, Santa Monica, Peninsula and Redondo.

The Mustangs did not place in the match at West because of the limited weight classes in which they have competitors. West finished first with 104 points. Santa Monica came in second place with 72 points and Costa ended the tournament with 46 points.

Senior Joey Beck placed third in his weight class division at the tournament, winning three of his four matches. Other top contributors for Costa included senior Justin Tam, who finished second in his weight class by winning two matches in the tournament. Junior Tyler Emery placed third in his weight class division, winning two matches in the tournament. As the only freshman on varsity, Jake Shapiro finished fourth in his weight class division, defeating a senior in one of his two match wins.

Senior Weston Carico wrestled in the 140-pound division and lost 9-7 in his championship match.

“It was great to wrestle as a team for the first time this season,” Carico said. “Personally, I believe I could have taken first place instead of second if I had pushed just a little bit harder in the last period of my match, but I am still happy with how we did overall in the tournament.”

The Mustangs will play today at Santa Monica in the Santa Monica Four-Way Tournament.

“It was good to get this season underway. Being able to compete against all these different schools was a great way to prepare for Bay League,” junior Ryan Barney said.
