Whether she is taking notes in an Advanced Placement class or speaking to her club at a

weekly meeting, senior Tooba Wasi practices true leadership both in and out of the classroom. Wasi believes that her success in academics and extracurriculars can be attributed to her passion for leadership and cooperation.

“I felt very honored, grateful and excited to be recognized,” Wasi said. “I think the various leadership roles I have across campus in addittion to my community service throughout these past four years helped set me apart.”

Wasi has been involved in the Model United Nations program and Orchestra for the entirety of her high school career. In addition, she founded two clubs at Costa: the UNICEF Club and the Girls Advancing Leadership in STEM Club. In the UNICEF Club, members promote actions of the UNICEF UN Committee and initiatives of their own. The GALS Club informs high school girls about the various STEM careers available to them and helps them gain the confidence necessary for success.

“Mira Costa has provided me with an immense number of opportunities in terms of academics and extracurriculars, and the great support system of teachers here has always pushed me to the best of my abilities,” Wasi said.

Wasi is passionate about English and physics in particular, she said, as these classes call for large amounts of collaboration and participation, which she feels are important to being successful in a learning environement.

“A lot of teachers have made a difference, so I couldn’t even begin to name them all,” Wasi said. “They have definitely helped me excel in every way possible.”

In the fall, Wasi plans to attend University of California, Berkeley, where she will study International Relations while minoring in Spanish or Arabic. Following college, she hopes to potentially pursue a career in political science.

“I think learning to figure out what you love to do and focusing on doing that has been the most important thing for me,” Wasi said. “I found my passions for political science and music through being part of MUN and orchestra, and it’s helped me figure out what I want to do later  in life.”
