Costa competes in All Star Surf competition

Top surfers from the Mira Costa surf team including sophomore Kyra Williams and senior Robbie Itzinger competed in the annual All Star surf competition on April first.

The contestants were put in five different categories which included, boys and girls longboard, boys and girls short board, and body board. There are around 3 rounds in each category with 6 surfers in each round. The top 3 of 6 surfers get to move on to the next round and the bottom 3 are knocked out.

Overall, all the surfers from Costa performed really well and we really stood apart from other schools,” Williams said. “Many surfers took home awards and titles and it shows just how strong our surf program is.”

Williams placed first in both the girls shortboard and girls longboard divisions. She also received the waterwoman of the year award, which honors the top surfers in the south bay. Coaches in Bay League voted on players which were nominated by their coach.

“I was really happy with my performance and I am really proud to take home two first place awards,” Williams said. “It was a big honor to be named waterwoman of the year and it shows that my coach along with other coaches see all of my hard work.”

Freshman Megan Seth placed third overall for girls longboard division and third overall for the girls shortboard division. She advanced to the finals after placing towards the top for the quarter and semifinals.

“I had a lot of fun at All Stars and I surfed well throughout the competition,” Seth said. I could have done better in the final round but overall I am proud of my performance.”

The Mustangs ended their league season undefeated and tied with Redondo for first place in Bay League. The team’s next competition will be in nationals through the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) on June 17-19 at Dana Point. Williams said that she feels the team is very strong this year and should perform very well.

“We have a lot of very talented and skilled surfers on our team that will help us excel in nationals,” Williams said. “Our team has had a great season and ut momentum should hopefully continue through nationals..”
