With the deafening sound of the crowd at Mira Costa’s home game on Friday, the Mustangs gave their all to the last inning of the game.

Mira Costa’s baseball team fell 1-0 to Capistrano Valley High School at a home game on May 26 in the CIF quarterfinals. Sophomore pitcher Christian Bodlovich kept Capistrano scoreless for four innings.

“I could not have asked for a better team and group to battle with day in and day out,” sophomore second baseman Dylan Dennis said. “I am just sad we could not get the job done when we needed to but this last game doesn’t define what our team was.”

Neither team scored in the first four innings until Capistrano scored a run at the bottom of the fifth inning. The Mustangs were able to get on base several times but had difficulty capitalizing to push runs across.

“Our defense and pitching was great today,” sophomore pitcher Joey Acosta said. “We will definitely need to work on hitting and execution when we have runners in scoring position.”

The energy was electric as senior right fielder Kohl Titzler stepped to the mound in the final inning. With two strikes, the crowd was apprehensive as Titzler took his swing. The team had great chemistry and a lot of talent during the game said senior center fielder CJ Shapiro.

“We played a good game and it was hard to get offense going,” junior pitcher Jesse Storey said. “Their pitcher was able to keep us off balance the entire game.”

Throughout the game, Costa kept up a good defense and did a great job coming together as a group Dennis said. Although Costa’s pitching was phenomenal, they were lacking at the plate said Dennis said.

“We were a very young team and we are looking forward to working so we can improve this year,” Dennis said.

The Mustangs ended their season 21-7 overall and finished 6-2 in Bay League. They came in first in the Redondo Union Tournament and second in the Boras Classic. The team will continue to work on moving runners over and being able to score them for next year’s season Storey said.

“We had a great season,” Acosta said. “However it ended a little shorter than we would have liked. Although on a positive note we did great job all year of pitching and playing solid defense.”
