Mira Costa will host the Second Annual Manhattan Beach Rotary Solo Competition preliminary round on Jan. 18.

The Manhattan Beach Rotary Solo Competition is divided into two levels: one level for orchestra members from nine and tenth grades, and another for eleventh and twelfth graders.

“We wanted to divide the competition into two distinct levels to make sure the level of talent is appropriate. I hope that the lower ninth and tenth division can look forward to advancing into the higher level in the future,” orchestra conductor Peter Park said.

Many Mira Costa orchestra students will be participating in this event. The performers will select their own music to perform at the preliminary round. A panel of musical judges will decide who will advance to the final round which will be held on Feb. 4.

“I think the Manhattan Beach Rotary Solo Competition is a great way to show the audience and judges the kind of music we like. I enjoy having control over which songs I play. I like not being forced to perform a song that doesn’t interest me,” sophomore violinist Kami Brawer said.
