Senior guard Zekiah LoVett ran wild against the Mustangs en route to dropping 25 of his team’s 74 points and handing Costa its second consecutive Bay League defeat.

The Mira Costa boys basketball team fell to rival Redondo Union High School, 74-51, on Tuesday at Redondo. The Mustangs put up a fight, but were not able to contain the high-powered Seahawk offense all game.

“[We] had to move the ball on offense and drive to the paint to either score or kick [the ball] out to a three point shooter,” sophomore point guard  Tyler Antrobius said. “We did a pretty good job executing, however we just needed to make more shots.”

The first half of the game was a shoot-out between the Mustangs and the Seahawks. The Mustangs had trouble containing Redondo’s senior guard, Zekiah LoVett, who scored 25 points in the contest. Costa’s junior guard Lucas Hobbs helped the Mustangs on both sides of the floor, sinking shots on offense and playing strong perimeter defense.

“They shot the ball really well from [three point range] throughout the game, and we kind of got caught up in taking some quick shots,” sophomoreguard Max McCalla said.

The Seahawks maintained a strong lead throughout the second half with many three point shots and transition buckets. The Mustangs continued their comeback attempts with short scoring runs, but the Seahawks eventually managed to run away with the contest. The Mustangs ultimately fell to Redondo Union with a final score of 74-51.

“Our defensive strategy was to keep the ball out of the paint and out of [Zekiah] LoVett’s hands,” junior forward Parker Lynch said.

The Mustangs, now 9-12 overall and 2-3 in Bay League, will play an away game against  Peninsula High School tonight.

“On Friday, we just need to bring all the energy we’ve got and be smart with the shots we take,” Lynch said.
