The Mustangs fell short to rival, Redondo which marked their final Bay League game of the season.

Mira Costa’s girls basketball team was defeated by a deficit of 30 points on Feb. 8 on the Mustang’s home court by a score of 62-32. On senior night, senior Kelli Toyooka shined leading the team with 3 pointers as well as being extremely tough, going for every ball.

“It’s pretty crazy to have been playing on my own senior night, the past two years I was chosen by the seniors then to be their fifth man, so having it be my night was kind of insane,” senior Kira Escovar said. “Looking back at how much the team has grown and how I’ve personally grown made me a little nostalgic but also happy.”

The first quarter ended with the Seahawks up, 24-4, with both teams having high-energy and tough defense. Seahawks were in a rhythm and were hard to stop on offense due to their multiple three pointers.

“I believe that we could have rebounded much better and also if we would have gotten our offense going more smoothly, it could have made a difference in the first quarter,” junior Juliana Chen said.

In the second quarter the Seahawks continued to stay in their rhythm which resulted in a score of 37-13, but the Mustangs continued to battle and went after every loose ball and were aggressive in the paint.

“We were were playing as a team and we were unselfish but we were just not able to put up as many shots as we would have liked to,” sophomore Alyssa Toyooka said.

In the third, the Mustangs were moving the ball well but they couldn’t knock down their shots ending the quarter with a score of Seahawks winning, 56-21. Costa did however limit their turnovers and were making their free throws which was helping their game.

“There is always things we could have done in any game but I’m really proud of how we kept our heads up and had a positive attitude throughout the entire game,” senior Haley Herdman said.

In the final quarter, the Mustangs had still not given up hope, senior Haley Herdman continued to make smart passes and try to find open shots amidst the Seahawks strong defense.

“I’m super excited to start play off season and believe that we have to continue to stay focused and continue to work hard in practice,” Skylar Herdman said.

Costa is now 16-12 overall and 7-3 in Bay League. The CIF bracket has yet to come out but the Mustangs are ready and excited for what’s ahead and are looking to continue to execute their offensive plays according to sophomore Skylar Herdman.

“I felt grateful to have stepped on the home court one last time,” Escovar said. “I played for my family and myself that night, and despite the outcome I felt proud of all that I have accomplished these 4 years on varsity.”
