Mustangs’s lacrosse netted a big win against the El Segundo Eagles, clutching up near the end of the game to to edge out their opponents and claim victory.

The Mira Costa boys lacrosse team defeated El Segundo at El Segundo High School, 10-8, on March 19. The top performer of the game included sophomore Cole Garvey for his solid defense to help secure Costa’s win according to junior Jacob Fernandez.

“We were slow to start and they got a few early goals because we just couldn’t find our momentum,” sophomore Lucas Menendez said. “Overall we won the game and scored a couple more goals to be in the lead so we can’t complain on our performance that much.”

To begin the game, the Mustangs headed out without much momentum, being unable to maintain a defensive effort and allowing their opponents to score. Despite the rough start, juniors Dylan Mark, Max Geoghan and senior Zach Horowitz all scored individual goals to put up points on the board for the Mustangs.

“From the start we were playing very slow on both sides of the ball,” sophomore Dane Weber said. “On offense we were standing still and not moving off the ball and on defense we were getting caught out of position and weren’t picking up shooters.”

In the second period, a barrage of two goals from junior Josh Maruyama along with a goal from Garvey put the Mustangs further in the lead to end at the half. According to Fernandez, the team still struggled on both sides of the field during the second quarter.

“At the half, we needed to come out with more energy because we started out slower than usual,” Fernandez said.

In the second half of the game, goals from Mark, freshman Jack Sizemore, and senior Macallan Laver allowed the Mustangs to remain on top over the Eagles. Costa was able to hold onto their lead for the remainder of the game, resulting in a 10-8 win over El Segundo.

“I think that we loss a couple possessions which allowed El Segundo to come back, decreasing our lead to two,” Fernandez said. “Despite that, we were able to maintain our two goal advantage and win.”

The Mira Costa boys lacrosse team is now 5-2 overall and will next face off against Santa Monica Vikings at Santa Monica High School on March 21. The team needs to improve on capitalizing on their possessions according to Fernandez.

“We did not play the way we wanted to even though we were able to capture a win,” Weber said. “We are going to have to play better during the rest of the week if we want to continue to win our games.”
