The Mira Costa surf team paddled hard towards victory at the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) State Championships, ending fifth overall.

The team competed in the state championships on March third and fourth at Seaside Reef in Cardiff. Top performer junior Kyra Williams made it all the way to the finals, placing sixth in the state.

“I think everyone had good heat strategy in the morning,” senior Ryan Ulrich said. “Some people in particular were able to capitalize on waves when they were in position for the bigger sets.”

Junior Alex Fry just missed the finals after making it all the way to the repercharge, and sophomore Megan Seth also made it to the semifinals, both of which helped the varsity team place fifth overall.

“Wave selection was an issue because some people only caught smaller waves which didn’t have as much scoring potential as the bigger waves some of the other competitors were catching,” Ulrich said.

The JV team placed second overall with their best finish ever behind San Clemente. Top performers included freshman Jake Rosenberg placing fifth in the long board final and sophomore Sophia Arky placing fifth in the short board final.

“The Freshman have really stepped up for us and replaced some of the better guys who graduated last year,” Ulrich said.

Costa surf went undefeated in league and are next competing against Huntington in a non-league competition. The competition is their biggest of the year and is on an undetermined date.

“We are looking really good this year. We beat Huntington Beach High School earlier this season in some really good waves and they are 17 time national champs,” Ulrich said.
