The Mustangs dug up a win against the Palos Verdes Sea Kings in a five set match.

Mira Costa’s boys volleyball team defeated Palos Verdes High School in five sets on April 19 at home. The top performer of the match was senior outside hitter Dane Johnson, who led the Mustangs with over 10 kills and blocks.

“We were able to connect well as a team, but we were not strong from the backcourt,” sophomore opposite Sam Collins said.

The Mustangs started out the first set with multiple service errors and blocks that deflected out of bounds. Costa came back in the middle of the set with kills from senior opposite Bobby Barkley, but the Sea Kings pulled out a win in the set with a score of 25-19.

“We had consistent hitting and passing, as well as our team’s dynamic and style,” sophomore Dain Johnson said.

Junior libero Lauch Farris and junior defensive specialist Will Bond took control of the back row with their digs and consistent serves. Junior middle blocker Adam Sevier contributed with blocks and multiple kills which caused the Mustangs to win the second set, 25-17.

“We were able to shut down their best player with our blocking and had a lot of first ball kills,” Bond said.

Costa won the third set, 25-20, with help from sophomore setter Jack Walmer and his variety of accurate sets. Junior outside Thomas Kretschmer received Walmer’s sets and executed with strong line shots.

“We are still looking to improve on our blocking and passing,” Kretschmer said.

In the fourth set, the Mustangs fell short of the Sea Kings, 25-22, but Collins strong plays had good coverage of blocks. The Mustangs rebounded in the fifth set, with a 15-12 victory.

“We can always improve on having a good attitude and keeping good entertainment throughout the match,” Walmer said.

The  Mustangs are now 18-5 overall  and  9-2  in Bay Leaue play.  They  played  Newport Harbor High School in an away game on Wednesday.  However, results were unavalible at the time of publication.

“Our passing was okay today but if we want to win Bay League then we need to pass much better,” Bond said.
