School board believes school trips need change

Recent events on school trips has led to the school board questioning the amount of time that should be allotted for these trips. Those who support the shortening of the trips state that the students will not miss as much time in the classroom. Opponents of the change believe that these trips are essential for students to have different experiences in new surroundings.

“At the April 18 Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting, the board discussed the newly proposed changes to the MBUSD school-sponsored trip policy that would limit extracurricular school-sponsored trips that could potentially cause absences. The recommendations for Board Policy 6153 would be beneficial because the decrease in student absences would ultimately lead to a decrease in student stress.” Powell said.

CON: School trips allow for new educational experiences

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees discussed its proposal to shorten extracurricular school-sponsored trips on April 18. Although students may be absent for an extended amount of time, these trips allow students to apply skills they learn in the classroom in a real world setting, as well as bond with their peers and teachers.” Williams said.
