Mira Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale announced in an email sent out to students and parents yesterday that Advanced Placement Exam proctors caught a Costa junior cheating on the AP Environmental Science Exam on May 10, and Costa officials went on to reporting the issue to the College Board.

Proctors confiscated the compromised test materials of the student. Administrators resolved the incident, secured the room after and the rest of the students went on to completing the exam, Dale said.

“I think this whole situation hurts everyone involved,” junior APES student Lauch Farris said. “I believe it would be very unfair to make the rest of the students who took the test without cheating be forced into a retake.”

The College Board and Costa are currently working together to make sure that no other exams were compromised. Students may be forced to partake in a survey that will ask if they had any unauthorized materials with them before or during the test.

“Other students should not be penalized for the actions of one student,” junior APES student Malcolm Kluth said. “The information sent out in the email made me somewhat reassured that I will not have to retake the test due to one student’s actions.”
