Kanye West shocks listeners with his questionable album release

Kanye West’s newest album “ye” sparked controversy among social media due to the sensitive matters incorporated in the songs.

West steers his music career in a different direction with “ye.” The album features repetitive and indistinguishable tracks in which Kanye West raps about highly controversial topics in a dull, incessant monologue. With the intention of creating “therapeutic” rap, the album focuses on the candid lyrics that are simultaneously blended with a soft, con-sistent beat.

“ye” is one of West’s short-est albums, containing seven tracks for a total of 24 minutes. G.O.O.D. Music and Def Jam Recordings produced the album, which officially launched on June 1. West collaborates with sev-eral widely known artists such as Nicki Minaj, Ty Dolla $ign, Kid Cudi, Jeremih and more.

Kanye West is a prominent figure in the media, exclusively known for his successful music career and his marriage to reality show star, Kim Kardashian West. Recently, West has been wreaking havoc among the media due to his controversial public statements via Twitter, which advocate Donald Trump’s presidency.

The focal point of the album is the content of the lyrics. West explores sensitive topics among America such as the conflict re-garding North Korea, the #Me-Too campaign, Donald Trump’s presidency and Kim Kardashian. Although West successfully ex-presses his opinion on current top-ics, his constant chatter becomes repetitive, making listeners wish for Kanye’s classic rap.

In spite of West’s tedious and constant chatter, the soft and steady beat throughout the album successfully keeps listeners attentive. The melody of the album is based off of the old track “Kothbiro,” released by Black Savage in 1976. “Yikes” is an exception to the moderate beat, picking up the pace of the album. It is the only song in which West consis-tently raps, reflecting his traditional rapping making loyal fans nostalgic.

Out of all of West’s previous albums, “ye” is exceptionally entertaining. Each track recounts an event or current topic, and tells a story to the listeners. Al-though many other artists have a similar intention, it is easy to follow West’s storyline due to the straightforward and simple delivery of his lyrics.

The album is highly disturbing due to the sensitive and personal details West reveals about him-self. The track “I Thought About Killing You” is a perfect example. West repeats “Today I thought about killing you, premeditated murder/I think about killing my-self, and I, I love myself way more than I love you.” This un-settling line is repeated for almost 5 minutes, accompanied by a pro-longed and monotonous beat that scares listeners.

The song “Wouldn’t Leave” is a slow track in which West pub-licly addresses his appreciation for his wife, Kim. He raps, “For every down female that stuck with they dude/Through the best times, through the worst times/This for you.” Incorporating this track that consists of a mellow beat effectively distracts listeners from other disturbing songs.

“ye” is an extremely bold re-lease for rapper Kanye West. The album is unlike any of his other traditional tracks, taking listeners by surprise with unorthodox songs and the repetitive mention of today’s issues. He openly expresses his way of thinking through his tracks, which are monotonous and contain extremely explicit content.

Released on June 1, “ye” is available for purchase on iTunes for $7.99 and can be streamed on Spotify, Youtube and Apple Mu-sic.
