After falling just short a week ago, the Mustangs bounced back in a big way on Friday night, putting on a show offensively on their way to a 42-21 rout of El Segundo.

Led by a massive six touchdown performance from senior quarterback Nick Carpino, Costa was able to cruise to a road win over the Eagles. Carpino had three rushing touchdowns and added three more scores through the air, all of which were caught by sophomore wide receiver Brody Mckinnon.

“Our offensive line played very well,” Carpino said. “They opened up a lot of big holes for us which was the key to our offensive success.”

The Mustangs started out the game on fire, putting together three touchdown drives in the first quarter. El Segundo was able to answer with a passing touchdown of their own, but the quarter ended with the Mustangs in front by a score of 21-7.

“We really wanted to get on the board early after a tough loss last week,” Carpino said. “We came out aggressively and it paid off.”

In the second quarter, it was the defense that stepped up for the Mustangs. Interceptions by Mckinnon and senior linebacker Koda Thormodsgaard helped keep the Eagles offense in check. The Mustangs tacked on more points with a late touchdown throw to Mckinnon, taking a 28-7 lead into halftime.

“Our defensive line did a great job of getting pressure on their quarterback which put us in good positions to create turnovers,” Thormodsgaard said.

The Mustangs continued their offensive dominance with two more Carpino touchdowns in the third quarter. The Eagles managed to put up 14 points of their own in the second half, but it was not enough as they ultimately were defeated 42-21.

“We played very well in all phases of the game,” Thormodsgaard said. “It was great to get our first road win of the season and hopefully we will be able to continue our momentum next week.”

With the victory the Mustangs have improved to a 2-1 record on the season. Next week they will be on the road again when they face West Torrance on Friday.

“We’re looking to have another great week of practice so we can go into Friday’s game having done everything we can to prepare,” senior wide receiver Matt Harry said.
