The Seahawks flew into Fisher gym and swept the Mustangs 3-0.

The Mira Costa girls volleyball team fell short against Redondo Union High School on Oct. 10, losing in three consecutive sets at home. The top performer of the match was junior outside hitter Talia Genova who contributed long serving runs and strong defense.

“It was a really good game in terms of the way we executed what we have been practicing,” Genova said. “Battling against one of the highest ranked teams in the nation is a privilege, but it’s one we have worked for this entire season.”

The Mustangs started out the first set strong with multiple kills from junior middle blocker Katie Colvin and senior middle blocker and outside hitter Memphis Glasgow. Costa led 18-15 late in the set, but Redondo fought back in the end with key blocks. Redondo took the opening set by a score of  25-20.

“In the first set we executed our coach’s game plan by hitting out of system plays to right back which gained us critical points,” Colvin said.

Costa began the second set strong offensively, in large part due to senior setter Rochelle Scott. She provided smart sets, allowing Costa  hitters to take accurate shots. However, the Seahawks began to pull ahead in the middle of the set by putting numerous balls away which contributed to a huge 25-14 second set win.

“We had a plan and they fortunately set up exactly how we wanted them to which gave us the ability to stay within a few points of them throughout the entire three sets,” Genova said.

The third set ended with a 25-20 Seahawk win. This match marked the end of the Bay League season for Costa, with a second place finish.

“Overall, I think that our defense did a solid job digging the balls we were supposed to, but our own errors on offense prevented us from gaining enough momentum,” senior libero Malia Yuhl said.

Costa will need to improve multiple aspects of their game in order to make a run in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs according to junior setter Jenny Jenks.

“We should improve on out of system plays by keeping the ball in play, when necessary,” Jenks said.

The Mustangs are now  23-9 overall, with a final Bay League record of 8-2. Costa will next play in the first round of CIF against  Long Beach Polytechnic High School on Oct. 18 in an away game. Despite the tough loss, the Mustangs are looking forward to the first round of playoffs and are excited for what’s to come in the future, said Colvin.

“I’m really excited to compete against the best of the best and see how far our hard work will take us,” Colvin said.
