Mira Costa boys basketball lost to Loyola High School 58-40 on December 7, 2018 at Redondo Union High-school with a top performance by Lucas Hobbs.

During the first quarter Costa came out with a lot of energy and did a great job at moving the ball on offense. Lucas Hobbs and Henry Housholter contributed greatly to the points earned by Costa during this quarter, ending it with a score of 9-4 Mira Costa with the lead . According to Lucas Hobbs Mira Costa had a strong start.

“ We started off strong and proved that we could compete closely with them.” Said senior Lucas Hobbs.

Loyola’s offense came out very strong the second quarter and Costa had a hard time keeping up. Although Loyola seemed to dominate this quarter Costa still managed to gain points. This quarter ended with a score of 19-31, Loyola in the lead.

“We knew Loyola was a good team, but we didn’t back down from the challenge because we know that we can play with anyone. I felt like we could’ve slowed the game down more, because once we sped up the game they were beating us in transition which allowed them to get more points.” Senior Carson Carey said.

Half time did Mira Costa well because they came back out ready to fight and brought the score back up to a close game. During this quarter Costa and Loyola were going back and fourth on offense but Loyola still had the upper hand. Due to shots by Parker Lynch and a three pointer by Carson Carey Costa ended this quarter 32-42, Loyola still in the lead.  According to senior Parker Lynch this quarter was very competitive.

“The third quarter of last week’s game was probably our most competitive. Both teams had a rhythm going on the court, and each team was hitting shots during almost every possession.” Said senior Parker Lynch

The fourth quarter was again very intense with both Loyola and Costa coming out strong and ready. Costa kept fighting throughout the quarter but ultimately could not beat Loyolas dominate offense. Despite Costa’s efforts Loyola came out on top with a final score of 40-58.

“Overall we played hard the whole game. We just didn’t shoot very well and I think if we shot better, the game could have been a little closer and we might’ve had a chance to win.” Said junior Max McCalla.

Mira Costa will next face off Peninsula on Tuesday December 11, 2018 at Peninsula at Penn High school.

“We were quite disappointed after the loss vs Loyola, but we kept our heads up because all we could really do was look on to the next game. Peninsula is a tough game to follow because they are a good team with a lot of talented players. We felt confident going in because we are a team that always wants it more, especially after a loss.” Carey said.
