Costa Varsity Softball Wins First Game of CIF Tournament

Mira Costa Varsity Softball won their first CIF tournament game against Notre Dame High School on May 2 at Notre Dame High.

The Mustangs came out with a slow start and were held scoreless through the first five innings. The Knights scored two runs in the first inning and one run in the second inning. In the sixth inning, Costa sparked a rally with second baseman Ella Lee hitting a single. Shortstop Amanda Siegel followed her with a double that scored Lee. Third baseman Angel Santellan hit a single and first baseman Jenna Ortega hit a double to score both Siegel and Santellan. Singles by catcher Mariana Ledezma and designated hitter Alani Gasca kept the rally alive. A ground out by Grace Householder brought Ortega in. A single by outfielder Piper Neri brought two more runs in. Lee hit a triple to score Neri and outfielder Emma Fong hit a single to bring in Lee. The Knights scored one run in the sixth and the Mustangs held them scoreless in the seventh. Costa won by a score of 8-4.

“Our win came for everyone,” first baseman Jenna Ortega said. “Everyone had a job to do and we did it successfully. Everyone kept being positive while we were losing and that kept us motivated. In the end, it all worked out.”

This is the Mustangs first win of the tournament and their record becomes 17-13. Costa win move on to the second round of the tournament and will play Diamond Bar on May 7 at home.

“I’m looking forward to keeping the momentum forward going into the next game,” Ortega said. “We had a great start, but we aren’t finished yet. I’m looking forward for us to come as a whole team and play like we know how to.”
