Mira Costa boys water polo dominated Peninsula High School on Tuesday, Oct. 15 with a home court advantage, 14-3.

The Mustangs used their pool to their advantage, while keeping up their defense the entire game. The top performer was junior Jake Carter who scored a whopping seven goals for his team. Alongside Carter was goalie, sophomore Bernardo Herzer that excelled at defense.

“We played really solid as a team overall which only makes us more pumped up for our game against Loyola,” Carter said.

In the first quarter Carter started the game off strong with four goals against the Panthers. His teammate junior Kai Scarlet managed to get one goal in while the rest of the team kept their defense up with only one goal in from their opponent ending, 5-1.

“We played really good defense to start the game off strong, which fed into our counter,” Captain, Ryder Theodore said.

The Mustangs stayed strong through the second quarter scoring four more goals and pushing their opponents on defense. Senior, Abby Arnove, Colin Tournat, Carter, and junior, Paolo Riviern helped their team each with one goal. Riverin was strong on defense helping goalie, Herzser block a goal.

“A lot of our players got a chance to score on our opponent which is great practice as a team building cooperation and communication,” Carter said.

In the third quarter of the game the Mustangs had a very strong lead, meanwhile changing their goalie to senior, Finn Condren. Top performer, Carter finds the back of the net again, scoring on Penn. Sophomore, Eric Quiggle helps the Mustangs keep climbing with their lead. Although, Condren does let Penn get a goal on them.

“It was nice for the players that do not get to play as much to get decent minutes,” Tournat said. “The team feels completed using the rest of our players.”

The Mustangs relaxed a bit during the fourth quarter and let some of the younger kids get into the game because of how strong their lead was. They managed to keep their defense up to ensure that they would obtain the win. Carter keeps up his offense as usual to top off the score, 14-3. Condren does not let Penn get any shot on them.

“It was a fun last quarter, trying out some new plays for the big Loyola Game tomorrow and giving lots of chances for people to play,” Condren said.

The Mustangs are scheduled to play their biggest rivals, Loyola High School with a home court advantage at 7:00 on Wednesday, October 16.

“Everybody is super pumped because it is going to be a very competitive game that we look forward to every year,” Carter said.
