Costa’s Associated Student Body held its first of three UCLA Blood Drives for the 2019-20 school year today from 8:30 am-12:30 pm. in the cafeteria.

The drive brought in 140 volunteers, contributing one pint of blood per person. According to ASB Director, Lisa Claypoole, each unit goes towards saving up to three lives. Each donor received a movie ticket in return for donating blood.

“In 11th grade, I signed up to give blood for the first time and I’ve given about 60 times since because when you give blood it makes you feel great,” Claypoole said. “The fact that someone who was in a car accident or someone who had open-heart surgery is going to receive that blood and it is going to help save their lives I think is awesome and I think is worth doing.”

Donors must be at least 16 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds with healthy iron levels. The UCLA Blood and Platelet Center provided nurses and equipment for the drive. ASB members checked donors in and wrapped their blood draws, following their donations.

“This drive is a great way to help others and is a nice thing for our school to get behind,” junior Sara Murray said. “The blood drive is a great way for Costa to give back in a different way.”
