Madeleine reflects on final days of first semester

With the mad dash of finals beginning next week (almost there, everyone!), it is easy to forget that the holiday season is just around the corner. No matter how eager everyone may already be for the school year to end, I am realizing that in a way, I do not want it to end, because it means I am a second-semester senior. It makes me nostalgic because I am not ready to let go of all of the friends I have made during my four years at Costa.

High school is such a unique environment because it forces you into situations where you have to interact with other people your age on a regular basis. The bonds we make with our peers, whether we are aware of it or not, are incredibly special.

After finals are over and the second semester begins, it is important to recognize that our daily lives contain so many incredible people who we will not be able to stay in contact with forever. We don’t often realize the rigid schedule of high school classes help us form bonds with those we might not be friends with otherwise. This is a unique type of social interaction that will be lost once we graduate.

For freshmen, it may seem like the time remaining in high school is endless. However, I can remember thinking as a freshman that I would never be a senior, and that senior year was endlessly far away. Nonetheless, here I am  thinking about how little time at Costa I have left.

As a result of the stress and constant busy nature of life in high school, forgetting how special these moments with our peers can be all too simple. In all of the hustle and bustle of finals and the new year, I encourage everyone to remember to appreciate the people you are surrounded with in the moment.

Whether or not there are people we would be happy not to have to see everyday anymore, there are also teachers, friends, and acquaintances who we might not realize matter to us as much as they do until the year is over.

So, before the year is over, make sure to remember that the people we share our time with at school will not be in our lives forever and that we should enjoy our time with them now.
