With powerful, emotional lyrics, Selena Gomez’s new album, “Rare” surpasses listeners expectations and shows a more vulnerable side of herself.
“Rare” features catchy, new beats with deep, meaningful lyrics in every song. Each song is about a different part of Gomez’s life and the listener can feel her every emotion through her unique voice.
Selena Gomez is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television producer. Gomez rose to fame with her portrayal of Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place on Disney Channel, and since then has starred in many films, such as Another Cinderella Story and Ramona and Beezus. In 2013, she released her first album, “Stars Dance,” which included “Come and Get It” which became her first top-ten entry on the US Billboard Hot 100.
“Rare” is Gomez’s third studio album through Interscope Records. She released the lead single “Lose You To Love Me” on Oct. 23 which became her first number one single in the U.S. The album is forty-one minutes long with thirteen songs. Gomez states that album has been her diary for the past several years.
In every song, Gomez’s voice is full of emotion, showing her vulnerability and authenticity. Gomez gives her all and opens up to her listeners about what she has been going through and how she feels, creating her album to be extremely powerful.
Every song displays how much Gomez has grown and come to accept herself. In “Lose You To Love Me,” she sings extremely confidently with strong lyrics. Gomez knows what she deserves and she will not accept anything less, which is prominent in this song and many others.
Two songs have featured artists: “Crowded Room” features 6LACK and “A Sweeter Place” features Kid Cudi. These songs add diversity to her album and allow for different sounds to appear in her album, such as faster tempos and refreshing, new beats.
Gomez’s dreamlike voice is unlike any other artist. Her voice is very pleasing and soothing to listen to and it blends perfectly with the beats and tones of each song. Each song has a unique melody that flawlessly molds together.
“People You Know” explains the harsh reality of how one can go from friends to strangers instantly. Gomez highlights how this can leave one devastated through her significant lyrics and remarkable rhythm.
“Rare” showcases Gomez’s new found peace with herself and the journey she took to get to where she is. The album is very distinctive with its own song and message. Gomez has come a long way in her life and in her music too.
“Rare” was released on Jan. 10 and is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. The album can also be streamed on platforms such as Spotify, Tidal, Youtube Music, and Apple Music.
