The Mira Costa girls soccer team clinched the win against Bay League rivals Redondo Union High School at Redondo, resulting in a 2-1 win on Tuesday.

The Mustangs maintained possession for most of the game. The girls utilized their teamwork with efficient passes, keeping Redondo off the ball for the majority of the game, coach Patty Perkinson said.

“We played as a team, and we had great intensity,” sophomore forward Ellie Weisenberg said. “We came out strong and determined to win.”

Early in the first half, the team’s possession contributed to the team’s success. Senior midfielder Sydney Miyasaki controlled the midfield and distributed the ball to the forwards. Costa also showed strength as a team through strong communication on and off the field.

“Going into it, we were all really excited to play Redondo,” Miyasaki said. “The last time we played them we won, so we knew that they’d come out strong and play harder than last time.”

In the second part of the first half, senior forward Rachel Rosen found the back of the net, scoring the only goal of the half. The Mustangs’ strong defensive line led to a shut out in the first half, ending, 1-0.

“I’m really proud of how we connected as a team and fought for each other out on the field today,” Miyasaki said. “We had to keep our head down and play the game we knew we could play.”

At the start of the second half, the Mustangs still maintained strong defense. Although the Seahawks picked up speed and possession of the ball, Miyasaki assisted Weisenberg early in the second half, scoring the second goal.

“We came out knowing they were going to fight back, but we were still playing to win in the end,” Weisenberg said.

Toward the end of the second half, the game did not slow down. Redondo capitalized on critical opportunities and scored a goal, but the Seahawks were unable to tie it up. The game finished 2-1 Costa.

“We finished off the game very strong with everyone giving one hundred percent to seal our 2-1 lead,” senior defender Emilee Ray said. “I think that this was the best that we have played all season and that it was a very well-deserved win.”

The Mustangs will play their next game at home against Palos Verdes Peninsula High School tonight at 6:00 p.m. Costa is currently on a three-game win streak, and the win improves their overall record to 14-1 and Bay League record to 2-1.

“After the way we played against Redondo, I think that we will definitely come out strong in our game against Peninsula. I think that we finally figured out how to play to our strengths and play as a team,” Ray said.
