Peach Pit perfectly encapsulates the essence of modern indie music with their latest release “You and Your Friends,” a definite hit for doting fans of the genre.

“You and Your Friends” provides listeners with cohesive, well-produced beats, truly showcasing Peach Pit’s contribution to the indie music scene. While the album as a whole presents a distinct sound and atmosphere, some of the tracks as individuals feel repetitive.

Peach Pit is an indie-pop band from Vancouver. The group consists of lead singer Neil Smith, guitarist Christopher Vanderkooy, bassist Peter Wilton, and drummer Mikey Pascuzzi. Their first album, “Being So Normal” released in 2017, and includes some of their more popular songs such as “Alrighty Aphrodite” and “Tommy’s Party”.

Released by Columbia Records, “You and Your Friends” is Peach Pit’s sophomore album, and hit streaming platforms on Apr. 3. The album consists of 12 tracks, and includes two earlier released singles, “Shampoo Bottles” and “Black Licorice”.

One of the album’s positive features is its continuity, which allows for a fluid listening experience. The tracks compliment each other well and make for an overall atmosphere that is unique to “You and Your Friends” as a whole. While this cohesion works for listeners who are experiencing the album from start to finish, most of the tracks, individually, do not have their own unique qualities, making them hard to enjoy as singles.

Peach Pit’s overall sound is indicative of their popularity within the indie genre, and that is displayed very clearly on “You and Your Friends.” The mostly mellow, surf-rock energy of the album makes for a comfortable and familiar listen for fans of both the band and music of the same genre. While the tone of the album is slightly more gentle than the group’s previous releases, long-time listeners will still be able to recognize Peach Pit’s unique beats.

The most stand-out track off of the album, “Shampoo Bottles,” is one of the most unique songs individually. The satisfying build-up from each verse to the chorus make for an exciting listen, and set the song apart from the rest of the album, and the engaging lyrics also make for a sing-along quality.

“You and Your Friends” is an impressive expression of Peach Pit’s unique and distinct sound. The mix of mellow beats and unique lyrics make for a comfortable listening experience for fans of both the band and indie music. While the tracks can become repetitive and lose individuality, the album is cohesive and creates a warm atmosphere perfectly.

“You and Your Friends” released on Apr. 3, and is available on most streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.
