While the battle scenes are exciting, the overall story of Netflix’s “Extraction” is basic and predictable.

“Extraction” fails to dig deeper than the surface with a predictable storyline and characters, and the brutality and violence throughout the film is overwhelming. The quality of the film was raised by the stunt work and impressive acting performances.

Netflix released “Extraction” on April 24, and the film is directed by Sam Hargrave. Chris Hemsworth both stars in and produces the film. Extraction” is based on a graphic novel  “Ciudad” by Joe Russo.

A black-market mercenary, who is played by Hemsworth, is hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. In the twisted world of weapons dealers and drug traffickers, a deadly mission soon becomes impossible.

The plot is predictable, following a troubled man using violence to mask his pain. It equates to a video game-like visual that simply keeps driving and killing until the movie is over. There is a lack of plot points that would add that deeper level to the film.

Despite the somewhat weak storyline, the biggest strength of “Extraction” is the impressive stunt work. Stunt coordinator-turned-director Sam Hargrove does an impressive job with all of the fight scenes. They are bloody and gruesome, but nonetheless done very well.

Although the film does its job as a thriller/action film, there is a lot of unnecessary violence and disturbing scenes. If Hargrove toned down the brutality, the film still could have achieved its action genre without making the viewer squirm in disgust.

Chris Hemsworth’s performance in the film was another aspect that raised the quality of the film. Powered by the charisma and physicality of Hemsworth, the film suggests that he has found his genre in the film industry.

Viewers looking for a violent thriller and enjoy excessive gruesome scenes will enjoy “Extraction”. Otherwise, the film is not worth the watch.

Released on April 24, “Extraction” is rated R and can be streamed on Netflix.
