“The Wrong Missy” doesn’t have comical quality, Lapkus rescues film

Due to a lack of decent acting and humorous dialogue, “The Wrong Missy” fails to please the audience, but makes up for it by casting Lauren Lapkus.

Although “The Wrong Missy” has a good cast and decent plot, the film seems a bit repetitive and humorless. With the same story being told, the film is a bore.

Released on May 13, “The Wrong Missy” is directed by Tyler Spindel. The film stars Lauren Lapkus as Missy and David Spade as Tim Morris.

The plot takes off with Tim Morris deciding to invite his dream girl on a corporate retreat, but instead, accidentally, brings along his horrible blind date, Missy. She was always the anti-Tim and was always super outgoing and loud, constantly running wild and causing accidents.

The random events that take place in the film are strange and unrealistic. Scenarios like breaking an ankle twice to almost getting eaten by sharks, the film’s wild adventures don’t always make sense. It makes the film hilarious, but the events are unnecessary and chaotic.

The overall plot of the movie is similar to previous Happy Madison films, making “The Wrong Missy” repetitive and uninteresting. Despite all the chaotic scenes, the film still fails to make audiences laugh with Lapkus being the only one that manages to keep the audience watching.

Along with the similarities of scenes, the jokes are a bit repetitive as well. The jokes seem lazy and too easy. They are easy set-ups and don’t seem to have a lot of effort towards them, and the only time the jokes seem to work is when Lapkus takes on her own version. She gives an intense performance and doesn’t hold back.

Missy is a big ball of energy that never dies down. She is constantly making people uncomfortable, scared, and nervous which makes it all the more laughable. Sadly, Tim was such a dry and boring character that even he seemed to be tired of himself. In some ways, the fact that both characters are complete opposites seems to work into the dynamic of the film. Tim starts to let loose and enjoy himself more because of Missy.

In the film there are several comedic actors that should have made the film a success. Unfortunately, only one of them gave a suitable performance. It’s clear that Lapkus was the only one that made viewers laugh. Because of her insane personality it improved the film and made it more fun to watch.

The film also has some built-in relationship advice. Missy, who is certified in almost everything, takes control in most of Tim’s colleges personal lives. It’s amusing to see the people become so invested in what Missy has to say and take her advice. When things start to get awkward with Tim her expertise in therapy provides a comic relief.

Based on the trailer, the movie doesn’t seem to be appealing at first, and yet, audiences are drawn to it. Lapkus has a lot to do with that appeal. She brings in viewers attention by being naturally funny and confident. Overall, Missy was always crazy and entertaining which made the overall quality of the movie better.

Released May 13, “The Wrong Missy” is rated TV-MA and is available on Netflix.
