With many sports temporarily shut down due to COVID-19, the California Interscholastic Federation [CIF] has adjusted the sports schedule for the 2020-2021 sports season.

As of Jul. 20, CIF has come out with a modified schedule to accommodate for the cancelation of the fall and winter sports seasons. While it will be extremely difficult to move all sports to the same time frame, it was concluded that there is no other option.

“This season I cannot play [basketball and softball] at once, so I have to choose one.” sophomore basketball and softball player Heather Roth said. “It’s really hard because I love both, and I don’t want to just bail on one. Overall, it’s a really tough decision.”

According to the official CIF sports calendar, all fall and winter sports will be moved to dates in between Dec. 26, 2020 and Mar. 20, 2021. As a result, Spring sports are set to be held between Mar. 6, 2021 and Jun. 12, 2021. CIF announced that they will be continuing to monitor how the global pandemic is affecting sports, and will make changes to this schedule if needed. At Mira Costa, many sports teams still have no information as to when practices will be able to start, and are left in the dark.

“[This situation] has affected my life, because when it comes to training and trying to get myself better, I like knowing that I have something coming up to work towards rather than just staying ready for whenever we go back, if we go back,” junior lacrosse player Jack Storer said.

As sports’s guidelines across the world continue to change due to COVID-19, athletes must learn to accommodate to constantly changing rules and regulations, in order to continue playing their beloved sports. As of Sunday, Sept. 13, some Mira Costa teams have gotten clearance to start practicing in person. These practices will be run very differently, as there have been many changes to accommodate to social distancing rules.

“Players will be split into groups of 12 based on their position,” junior Addison Lee, pitcher for Costa’s varsity baseball team, said. “Each group will be assigned a coach that they stay with throughout the fall. The largest change will be that we can’t interact with our teammates in the same way we used to. We can’t do a lot of normal baseball activities, like inter squad games, and live batting practice.”
