After starting the demolition and building process in early 2019, the construction of Costa’s new gym concluded at the start of the 2020-21 school year.

Costa spent about $38 million on this renovation, and the entire athletic complex is about 38,000 square feet, according to Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale in an interview with The Beach Reporter News.

“All last season we had to play at MBMS because of the gym renovation,” senior Piper Stevens said. “This was somewhat problematic for girls who couldn’t drive and their parents were working. Although, I haven’t seen the new gym yet, I’m super excited to hopefully start practice soon.”

Costa’s new gym seats 2,400 people, while the previous gym merely held up to 200 students. According to Dale, visiting teams will have their own entrance and exit doors and locker room space. There will also be a training room, TV monitor showing what’s going on in the main gym and camera monitors that will be placed in multiple locations throughout the gym. Along with all of these additions, there will be a deck covered by a glass wall.

“Usually we would have practice right after school but with the gym gone, we had to take an extra trip to wherever practice was,” Junior Christian Huang said, “I’ve heard we just put in the floors and even despite COVID we are lucky to have the people committed to working on our gym. The gym will have an amazing impact on the Costa community.”
