The Presidential Election was Nov. 3 with former Vice President Joe Biden coming out victorious. On Nov. 7, Pennsylvania announced its 20 electoral votes would go to Biden, which meant he won the electoral college, there was widespread celebration in all major cities of the U.S., streets were flooded with American citizens showing their pride throughout the day. President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris spoke about bandaging the current divide in the country and representing everyone in the U.S., regardless of their political affiliation, at night.

However although many different sources agree that Biden won the election, President Donald Trump has made claims about this not being the case. Trump did not agree to a peaceful transfer of power when asked about it, which is very dangerous for the country. This refusal to concede makes the country vulnerable, as the transition between Trump and President-elect Biden may not be similar to anything the country has experienced in the past. As young citizens in this country who are new to the political scene, it’s worrisome that this transition could potentially affect the future.

While the results of the presidential election became official on Saturday, California and Manhattan Beach propositions were still being counted. The outcomes of these various propositions greatly affect the residents of California, Manhattan Beach and students at Costa. Proposition 18, for example, which allows 17 year olds who will be 18 by the next election to vote in the primary, would have an impact on Mustangs in the future. This proposition would have allowed for more students our age to experience more of the democratic practices on which the country is founded.

A lot of teenagers who are not 18, especially those who are 17, feel helpless because they cannot vote in the primary to make their voices heard. These are invaluable experiences that could have a major impact on the outlook young people have, as voting in the primaries at 17 years old would encourage the younger generation to become more involved in and educated about politics. Young people voting is extremely important, as the politicians being elected right now are the ones who decide what the future will be like.
