New schedule replaces Wellness Wednesday

As seen above, with the new hybrid schedule, Wellness Wednesday is removed from Costa’s schedule. This will allow students more time to meet with teachers as well as more class time for all.

As Mira Costa transfers from online learning to a new hybrid schedule for students, Wellness Wednesday has been cut. The new hybrid schedule allows for students to be on campus five days a week, removing Wellness Wednesday from the schedule. Although Wellness Wednesday was supposed to be a day where students could focus on mental health but it ended up being a hard day for most students. Teachers were assigning more schoolwork for students,
not allowing for time to catch up on old work. The replacement of Wellness Wednesday is an advantage for all students.

Wellness Wednesday mornings consisted of a two hour collaboration time block for teachers. Students did not have to join zoom calls during this time, allowing them to sleep in. Even though students were given the time to sleep in, many students realized that this time was needed in order to complete the work that teachers assigned. This created a stressful day, rather than a helpful relaxing day for students.

Students were required to meet for Social Emotional Learning (SEL), at 10:10 am for about 25 minutes. Teachers provided school news and also talked about mental health issues. Students were able to share stories and connect with one another. SEL was helpful for students, but the stress that came with Wednesdays overpowered SEL’s help to students. However, students can still meet with their teachers every day after school from 1:45-3:00 with the new
hybrid schedule. Overall, SEL was a helpful time for students, but because of the busy workload, students were not able to enjoy it.

Students’ time with teachers is not being taken away from them with the replacement of SEL. In fact, with the new hybrid schedule students are given even more time to meet with their teachers. Students can still meet with their teachers every day after school from 1:45-3:00 with the new hybrid schedule. Implementing the new hybrid schedule and replacing Wellness Wednesday give students more time to meet with teachers, even if it may not seem that way.

The new hybrid schedule also releases students from class earlier than the online learning schedule did. Students get out of school at 12:25 each day with the hybrid schedule. Before, students were required to be on zoom until 2:00 everyday. However, students still have the opportunity to meet with teachers every day after school from 1:45-3:00, if need be. The new hybrid schedule comes with many benefits and replacing Wellness Wednesday is not as bad as it seems.

Although Wellness Wednesday was designed to be a relaxing catch-up day, it was not. The decision to get rid of it allows students to have more class time with teachers, but it does not take away the opportunity to meet with teachers. The replacement of Wellness Wednesday is beneficial for all students and the new hybrid schedule is going to be well-liked by most everyone.
