In October of 2020, the City of Redondo Beach approved the construction of two skate parks: one in Parcel 10 on the Redondo Beach pier, and one at Perry Park in North Redondo.

Professional skateboarder David Bernier began advocating for a new skate park in Redondo Beach in 2016. This year, the City of Redondo Beach approved the construction of the two skate parks in response to his request.

“Redondo needs a skatepark …. I’m glad to see us taking a step to finally find something that could work,” Mayor of Redondo Beach Bill Brand said.

The funds allocated for the Parcel 10 skate park is $100,000, while construction in Perry Park is budgeted at $30,000. However, the funds allocated for the new parks may not be sufficient—a new skate park built in Manhattan Beach had a budget of $470,000 and is still considered to be relatively small.

“I’m so excited to be able to skate these new skate parks,” said senior Dakota Buckley. “I live super close to the new locations so I would be able to go almost every day.”

The construction of the two skate parks was approved almost a year ago, but work on them has not yet begun. This is not uncommon, though, as construction done on skate parks is typically a very long process—the Manhattan Beach skate park was approved for construction in January of 2016, and the park was completed in March of 2017.

“I hope they start and finish building the skate park soon,” said Costa senior Dylan Harkenrider. “I want to be able to skate in it before I go off to college.”
