“New 2 U”, a new safe line of clothes, enters El Segundo.

“New 2 U” clothing line highlights environmental factors by keeping their clothes safe for environmental health. This new fashion line highlights finally giving back to the community.

“New 2 U” is sponsored by SouthBayCares with a motto of “Slow Fashion.” Their motto was made to spread awareness on the pollution and hostile work environments that fast fashion has created.

For $10 admission and free for students, this event includes a vintage/designer runway show, a DJ, a silent auction, a raffle and vintage clothes to shop from. The money will go to nonprofit organizations and will be donated to give clothing to the homeless in LA.

This runway show was just as impressive and organized as any other. It is beautiful to see the South Bay community giving back with style. All the outfits from the runway show were second-hand goods, showing its opposition to fast fashion.

After the runway show, there was an amazing speaker who expressed her love for fashion and presented innovative ways to have eco-friendly shopping. Guest speaker Daisy Chen Hutton, co-founder of The Fixx Collective, spoke about her fashion experiences and goals running her own business. The Fixx Collective is an anti-bland sustainable brand. Hutton had a natural gift for fashion her whole life; she had a knack for knowing what women wanted to wear on their bodies.

The Fixx Collective concept is that women and men should buy the clothes that they know they will wear for a long time, basic necessities. In addition, they should try to buy from eco-friendly shops or second hand. The Fixx Collective wants people to shop with a purpose and to become aware of where clothing is coming from. The Fixx Collective was a huge eye-opener, showing the South Bay community the damages that fast fashion can create.

Hutton impacted everyone she was talking to at the event. All attendees were exposed to the truth behind their everyday shopping and how there are easy steps to reduce peoples’ carbon footprints. Hutton talked about how the fashion industry uses 93 billion cubic meters of water, which is enough for five million people to meet their consumption needs. The way she spoke established how people need to be educated on the environmental dangers with fast fashion. Everywhere she worked, like Guess and other big name brands, all they talked about was profits, growing sales, and selling more clothes rather than about the global impact they had on the world, according to Hutton.

“New 2 U” has a beneficial goal to stop fast fashion or at least slow it down at a minimum. Fast Fashion is a mass-production of cheap disposable clothing. Most only wear their clothes seven times before throwing away or donating to Goodwill. While donating to Goodwill, only about 20 percent makes it in the store; the rest gets shipped to landfills.  New 2 U has acknowledged the problem that the fashion industry is responsible for 10 percent of annual global carbon emissions.

“New 2 U” is incredibly impactful due to the fact that it informs many unaware people about the damage that the fashion industry has created in our environment. They want to influence as many people as possible to shop at environmentally friendly brands and not Target since those companies attribute to fast fashion.

New 2 U had taken place on Nov. 7 from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. located at El Camp Coworking Space in El Segundo.
