Tsunami warnings were issued to all South Bay communities on Jan. 15.

Following an underwater volcano eruption in the Pacific Ocean off the island of Tonga, warnings were broadcasted to all personal mobile phones and relayed on television. While no significant waves occurred along the Manhattan Beach coast, some northern California cities experienced severe flooding.

“The tsunami warning was unexpected, but I wasn’t too worried because I know that the beach is relatively isolated from homes and other buildings,” sophomore Natalia Liang said.
