On May 23, Costa boys lacrosse was awarded the California Army National Guard Team of the Month for the month of March. Of all of the submissions over California, Costa was one of only two teams to receive the award for its selfless acts of service on campus and throughout the community.

“This award shows the work we are doing in the community, and it is great for the program,” junior defender Sam Carpenter said. “It shows the work we put in when we aren’t working hard on the field.”

The Lacrosse team received its award at one of their practices by Sargent First Class Michael Williams, a member of the military, will be present around campus throughout the next school year. The military gave them the award because the California Army National Guard partnered with the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) to recognize the outstanding boys and girls sports teams.

“We were in the middle of stretching and saw [Williams] walked onto the field and presented us with the award,” freshman defender Breccan Holman said. “It felt really good to be a part of that and was really cool that he came over to congratulate us.”

The lacrosse team helped Costa by cleaning the campus several times during the season. They clean the stadium bleachers, the two fields, and the track. The team also participated in the Jewish Cultural Club, where they lend support every Tuesday to fellow teammates.

During the off-season, the team came up with ideas to give back to the school and the community. According to freshman midfielder Dylan Fenton, head coach Aaron Karsh pushed the team to create ideas and give back to the community. He encouraged everyone to demonstrate their selflessness, which granted them the deserving award.

“I think it is really special for our guys to get recognized for doing something above and beyond themselves and give back to the community,” Karsh said. “It is definitely cool for our guys to be a part of something so special.”

According to Karsh, boys lacrosse plans to volunteer at the Jimmy Miller Foundation in the summer. This foundation is an organization that brings veterans and at-risk youth to the beach for surf therapy.

“As a dad, it means a lot to see that my son is doing all of these amazing things to help the school and the community,” lacrosse dad Chris Fenton said. “I love that the team got noticed for doing this, and it definitely makes me happy that my son was a part of it.”
