On September 2, 2022, the Mustangs defeated Mayfair 33-14 in a dominating performance by both sides of the ball. Mira Costa controlled the game from the beginning, going up early and staying strong throughout the game.

“It was definitely a fun game to watch especially after last week,” said Dylan Fenton, a sophomore at Costa. “It was a relaxing game after a devastating last minute loss against St. Francis.”

Nico De La Cruz was connecting with his wide receivers all game long. Wide receivers, Senior Cole Crotty and junior Reese Leonard both had multiple touchdowns and led the offense to over 400 total yards. According to Fenton, the best play of the game was the touchdown pass from Cole Crotty to Reese Leonard.

“I was excited after throwing that touchdown,” said Crotty. “We had never really practiced that play a ton but I knew Reese was down there somewhere all I had to do was throw it up for him.”

The Mayfair offense was stagnant throughout the game, due to the strong defensive performance by the Mustangs. The Mustangs kept the Monsoon offense to 271 total yards and 2 touchdowns. The Mustang defense let up 52 points week one against St. Francis, but bounced back this week.

“I believe the biggest factor was the defense,” said quarterback Nico De La Cruz. “They let up a little too many points week 1, so holding Mayfair to only 2 scores was a huge factor in a dominant win.”

The Mustangs move to 1-1 going into this week’s away game against Hart High School on Friday September 9, at 7 PM.

“I think we just have to keep preparing each week,” said Crotty. “We can’t get satisfied with just one win, we have to keep working for the results that we want as a team.”
