Mira Costa boys soccer won 4-1 against South High School in their season-opening match on Friday, December 2nd.

Senior midfielder Dylan Kodama scored the season opening goal early into the match, giving the Mustangs the 1-0 advantage halfway through the first half. The Spartans responded with a goal towards the end of the first half, tying the game 1-1 going into the second.

“Scoring the first goal of the season felt great,” Kodama said. “It gave me confidence to lead this group of talented individuals.”

The Mustangs opened the second half with a goal off of a throw-in by senior forward Thomas Temperley. A few plays later, senior defender Sam Skinner threw a throw-in towards South’s goalkeeper, who caught the ball, but dropped it into his own goal.

“I hadn’t scored a goal in about three or four years, so I was obviously excited,” Skinner said. “Scoring a goal like that though, it made it really special.”

Junior forward Nico Desisto scored Costa’s final goal of the night off of a shot from near midfield. The Mustangs held South to their single goal for the rest of the game, winning 4-1.

“It felt great to win our first match by so much,” senior midfielder Finn Engels said. “Nevertheless, we still have a lot of work to do.”

According to junior defender Sean Gauer, the team hopes to continue the same level of dominance they showed in their opening match on Tuesday, December 6th against El Segundo High School.

“It feels great that our team can click so fast in the beginning of the season,” Gauer said. “As long as we keep up our high intensity and our will to win, we’ll be on a great path for the rest of the season.”
