‘Babylon’ impresses viewers with style, delivers uniqueness, aesthetics

The highly anticipated “Babylon” successfully meets expectations through excellent production, acting, and direction from Damien Chazelle. “Babylon” was released on

Dec. 23 and features an incredible cast. Chazelle, who is most famously known for his direction of well-known films like “La La Land”. Some cast members include Margot Robbie as Nellie LaRoy; Brad Pitt as Jack Conrad; Diego Calva as Manny Torres; and Jean Smart as Elinor St. John.

The film is based on the lives of actors in the 1920’s. The actresses and actors’ ambitious pur- suits to climb the ranks of Hollywood constantly interfere with their personal lives and with each other’s relationships.

Chazelle’s aesthetic artistic style is prevalent in this film. “Babylon” is a well-rounded film with stunning visuals—both in- dividual scenes, performances, and tech elements all tie together incredibly well, bolstering Chazelle’s reputation as both an artist and a director.

The plot and the characters are tightly interwoven to create the perfect balance of character dynamics and plotline. The actors give plentiful energy to their characters, making the movie seem very realistic and keeping the audience entertained for the movie’s three-hour runtime.

The film included an undeniably star-studded ensemble, including Margot Robbie, who delivers a fearless performance, and Diego Calva, an extremely talented novice a  ctor. However, Brad Pitt is the true star of the film. He conveys an immense amount of emotion that makes his performance as Jack very different from all of his past roles.

This movie provides an interesting and entertaining insight to the Hollywood industry that is run by capitalism and money. It spotlights those who cannot live without the business as opposed to those who must leave it, if they hope to keep their creative integrity. The audience is enlightened by the intensity of the movie industry.

The film’s cinematographer, Linus Sandgren’s fluid cinematography gives the film momentum. His shots are rarely flashy, but always dynamic and impressive. Justin Hurwitz’s score provides depth to the film’s characters and evokes a range of emotions in viewers. The production de- sign is incredibly creative, but is also very realistic. Every element of production of this film is very well executed, resulting in a phenomenal movie.

Damien’s artistic vision, as well as the actors’ performances, are very indicative of the tension the film is trying to portray. This makes the film extremely enter- taining and very believable. This film is well-acted, visually ap- pealing, and incredibly sensation- al. This is definitely Chazelle’s most truthful and best project.

“Babylon” is definitely a must see, as it features a talented cast, a realistic and dynamic plotline and superb production. It is evi- dent that a great deal of work and effort was put into this film, which surely paid off.

“Babylon” was released on Dec. 23 and is currently available for viewing in theaters.
