In July 2022, Costa freshman Nolan Chung and sophomore Kira Chung, and Redondo Union sophomores Hunter Taylor and Sophia Longergan put their musical skills together to produce the band Double Knotted.

All four members of the band have been playing their instrument between two and six years and met at the South Bay’s School of Rock.

“We were all hanging out as friends and eating Shake Shack, and we looked at each other and just had the fun idea to start a band. Everyone had their instrument that could make up a solid band. And so it became a thing,” Kira Chung said. “We have all been or are a part of a program called School of Rock. It is where we all met and developed our skills of playing with other people, specifically, with each other.”

The band members named the group Double Knotted because they all double knot their shoes. In the band, Kira Chung plays the bass guitar, Nolan Chung plays the drums, Taylor is the lead guitarist, and Longergan is the lead singer.

“We were at my house eating pizza and realized we all double knotted our shoelaces, and so we just decided that that was our name from here on out.” said Kira Chung. “We all enjoyed playing music together in a separate extracurricular band, and we all had good chemistry and drive to start playing together weekly.”

In the past few months, Double Knotted has played for local venues such as: Project Barley, The End, and Schooner Bar and Grill. In addition they perform for family and friends during celebrations. The band plays diverse types of rock music such as alternative, indie, and classic.

“[Double Knotted’s] least favorite part of being in the music industry is that it is a very competitive industry that has a reputation of being quite negative.” said Kira Chung We hope to leave the negative behind and just channel the positivity music brings to our lives.

In the future, Double Knotted hopes to release music on Spotify and YouTube and join the Battle of the Bands, which is hosted at Redondo Beach’s Beach Life Festival.  According to Chung, their dream performance venue  would be Coachella or the Colosseum.

“We have several original songs that we want to produce and release this year, and we hope that people will enjoy our music and resonate with our sound,” said Kira Chung. “We also hope to join the Battle of the Bands in May at the Beach Life Festival.”

According to Kira Chung, she hopes to stay involved with music when she graduates from high school. Double Knotted uses social media and local advertising in order to share their music with a wide variety of audiences.

“We have connections with South Bay music connections which extends our platform to other bands in the South Bay. We also have several social media pages; our Instagram is @doubleknottedband, and our Tik Tok is @doubleknottedband.” said Kira Chung.

“Our favorite part of being in the music industry is simply getting together and making music. What I mean by that is we all plug in our amps and take our instruments out, and we put all our skills together to create something amazing. To see something come alive, especially when it’s all together, is truly the best feeling,” said Chung.
