Late Start and Minimum Day’s help increase students education

Staff Writer : Mia Escobedo

In the State of California, schools were required to start school at 8:30, nothing earlier unless a zero period. This law changed in 2022, whereas before school’s were able to start the first period any earlier. This raises a problem because it’s important for kids to obtain adequate sleep for their health.

Each student should get eight hours of sleep every night to avoid feeling stressed when they have to get up between six and seven in the morning for school. Costa has nine days with a late start that begin at 9:47 throughout this school year. Minimum day should be another option for students. Students would have enough time to study and relax after school thanks to this. The administration should alter the schedule rather than keeping regular school hours every day to allow more students to complete their assignments without having to stay late.

According to the Cdc, 75% of American students begin their day before 8:30. Lack of sleep among students may cause them to perform poorly in class. High school and middle school students aged 13 to 18 should each receive about eight to 10 hours of sleep per night. Students frequently catch themselves dozing off in class, which speaks to how little sleep they receive. Lack of sleep can result in sleep deprivation, which can cause depression and heart problems.

Not getting enough sleep can cause student’s to pay less attention in class. 73% of students in high school don’t get enough sleep.

A shorter school day gives children more time for homework and individual study, which improves their sleep routine. Students often have more spare time because the minimum day finishes around 12:30. Athletic students often finish up by 4 o’clock, and studies have shown that getting to bed at 10 o’clock is healthy. This leaves students with 6 hours of free time to complete their schoolwork. Students would have more free time if they had a minimal school day rather than finishing their homework and going to bed right afterwards.

Students shouldn’t simply have six hours of free time each day when they already spend eight hours a day at school learning and studying. With classes ending at 12:30, students have more time for activities such as going out, homework, studying, and extracurriculars. However, the 3 p.m. dismissal hour leaves students with little to no time to accomplish much after school.

In cases where students don’t receive enough sleep, schools should start around 9 or 9:30. Schools could dismiss at 3 or 4 p.m. Classes would start at most one hour later and students would get more sleep. Students will only become more exhausted and worried if they continue to arrive at school at 8:30. Schools should be concerned about the health of their students and should assist them by providing more minimum and late start days.
