Costa hosts annual 2023 Mustang Speed Invitational at Waller Stadium

Track and field hosted its fourth meet of the season, the 2023 Mustang Speed Invitational, at home on March 25 with an overall score of 280.

The meet featured events such as the 100, 200, 300, and 400-meter sprints, as well as 110 and 300 hurdles. Costa competed against multiple schools, including Palos Verdes, Peninsula, Redondo Union, San Pedro, West Torrance, Millikan, and Bishop Montgomery.

Costa track runners participate in the Women’s Frosh/Soph 200 M at Waller Stadium on Mar. 25. This was Costa’s 4th track meet overall and 2nd home meet.

“I’m proud of how well the team did at this meet,” junior Brianna Santoro said. “It is really fun supporting my fellow Mustangs.”

In the Mustangs’ second home meet, Costa dominated the women’s 4×100-meter relay, as well as the 400-meter sprint, in which senior Trudy Watkins came in first with a time of 58.26. Sophomore Charley McCarthy also came in first for the men’s 400-meter sprint, with a time of 50.97.

Costa’s track runners participate in the Men’s Varsity 200 M at Waller Stadium on Mar. 25. There were numerous track and field events throughout the day.

“We were pretty consistent with our performance throughout this meet and are continuing to get better on the track,” junior Kylie McGarry said.

According to Santoro, Costa continued to improve in the hurdle events, as junior Avana Zenner took first in the women’s 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.21.

Costa competes in the 2023 Mustang Speed Invitational against various South Bay high schools.

“Saturday was an invitational, and invitationals are more important because there are more teams,” said Zenner. “A lot of athletes wanted to run good times because the Arcadia Invitational is coming up, which is the most competitive and exclusive high school track meet in the country.”

Costa finished this meet with an overall score of 280. The Mustangs’ next meet will be April 7-8 at Arcadia High School for the two-day Arcadia Invitational, which runners must qualify for.

“We had major PRs (personal records) across almost the entire team,” Zenner said. “Overall, Costa performed really well and won a majority of the events.”
