The Mira Costa boys volleyball team lost against Cathedral Catholic in the Division 1 Southern
California Regionals CIF-SS Preliminaries on Tuesday.

The team lost, 3-1, against Cathedral Catholic in an away game for its first round of the CIF
SoCal Regional Playoffs. The Mustangs traveled to San Diego to face Cathedral Catholic on
their home court. According to CIF rules, each Division 1 match took place at the home site of
the higher-seeded team.

“Going into our game [against Cathedral Catholic] we had confidence we were going to win
even though we were missing three of our starters,” junior outside hitter Cortez Guillermo said.
All of the CIF SoCal Regional first-round matches took place on Tuesday at 6 p.m. There were
three rounds in the regional playoffs; the second round for the winning teams took place on
Thursday, and the finals are on Saturday.

“We were hoping to make it to the second round on Thurday, but just unfortunatley could not
capitalize against Cathedral,” junior outside hitter Victor Loiola said. “Even though our season is
over, I know we will be back and better than ever next season and, hopefully, have a different
ending.”

The Mustangs lost the first two sets 25-20 and 25-21, but found momentum in the third set,
winning 25-20. According to Loiola, the Mustangs headed into the fourth with hope of a
comeback but failed to capitalize on the Dons, losing 25-18 and 3-1 in sets.

“They [The Dons] just played better, plain and simple,” junior setter Tread Rosenthal said. “I
think up until the last game we had a very good season where we came back strong from a lot
of controversy.”

The Mustangs closed their season with an overall record of 31-8 and Bay League record of
10-0.

“All in all, It was a great season, and this is especially true because we have such a great group
of guys,” Guillermo said. “We’re all excited for next year and will work hard to prepare.”
