The city of Manhattan Beach held their 46th annual 10k Saturday, October 7, from 7:30 to 10:30 AM. The 10K tradition started in 1978 and has been going for 46 straight years. The race was held on the yearly hometown fair weekend, and is a strong start to the fair.

“I feel that it is an important tradition in Manhattan Beach,” Macy Canavan said. “It brings the people together and it causes them to work together to reach a common goal of finishing.”

According to mb10k.com, over 3,500 runners complete the race every year. They start on 3rd street right below the green belt and finish at the famous landmark, the pier. According to Canavan, her favorite part of the race is seeing people she knows.

“My favorite of running is definetely getting to see a lot of my friends and family running,”  Canavan said. “It’s a great community and everybody motivates each other to finish the race.”

The Mira Costa choir sings at the 10K before the race starts and then helps the racers throughout the race by giving them water. According to junior Jaxon Strokye, the choir has been doing this for a long time and believes it should be a continued tradition.

“We sign the national anthem right before the start of the race, and then we pass waters to runners along the track and pick up trash,” Strokye said. “We do enjoy the singing more than the other work but it is all fun and a great bonding experience.”

The Costa Cross Country team has been running the race for a while, and according to mb10k.com, they are constantly having runners score low times. According to junior Charlie Staskow, the race is a way for him to do what he loves to do.

“Running the 10k is very important to me because I run it every year with my cross country team,” said Stazkow. “It is a way for us to just go out there, have fun, and do what we love.”

According to mb10k.com, thanks to sponsor 3 Leaf Realty, 250 dollars was given to both the male and female winners. This year, the Manhattan Beach 10K was designated the RRCA California State 10k Championship. The 47th annual 10k coming up in 2024 was also designated.

“I think the 10k is very important because it is tradition here in Manhattan Beach,” said Stazkow. “It is for a good cause and benefits your body and mental health and is a way for the whole community to come together and bond.”
