Costa won its annual holiday Comedy Sportz match against Palos Verdes High School (PVHS) at 7 p.m. on Dec. 1 in the Small Theatre.

The Costa team was wearing red and the PVHS team wore blue. The match was holiday themed, so each player added holiday gear to their uniform. Tickets cost $5 at the door. In the first half, the Costa team included seniors Caden Coons, Margot Powell, Jackson Yollin, and sophomore Emily Hucul.

“I enjoyed how festive all of the Comedy Sportz players were and how both the Costa and PVHS teams really embraced the holiday theme,” said senior Akash Mishra. “The Christmas music was also a great touch as it provided that feeling of holiday cheer.”

Costa won in the first game of the match: “Beastie Rap.” The second round of games included a performance by Costa in “Blind Line” and PVHS in “Four Square.” Costa won the second round leaving the score 10-0.

“‘Blind line’ is my favorite game to play,” said Coons. “I love how random the scenes get.”

In the next round, Costa played “Curfew” and PVHS played “New Choice.” Both teams then competed in a game of “Object Freeze,” leaving Costa in the lead of the first half with a score of 18-12. At intermission, the audience was given a chance to buy various snacks.

“My favorite parts of the match were the head-to-head games like ‘Beastie Rap’ and ‘Object Freeze’ because there was definitely some friendly competition there,” said Coons.

After intermission, going into the second half, each team switched out their players. Costa’s team consisted of seniors Siena Frederick and Chris Halkias, and juniors Zoey Meyer and Chloe Estrin. The second half of the match started with a win from PVHS in “Expert Challenge.”

“My favorite game to play was “Expert Challenge” because I love a good roast battle,” said Frederick. “The best part of the match was winning.”

PVHS then played the game “Good Bad Worse” which lost against Costa’s game: “DVD.” In the next round, Costa chose to play “Tag Team Monologue” and PVHS chose to play “Stunt Doubles.” PVHS won that round, bringing the score to 22 (PVHS) and 23 (Costa).

“I love playing PVHS because they’re better than the rest of the schools,” said Frederick. “I like being part of a group with all different kinds of people who are funny and great to hang around.”

The final game of the match was “Garth,” which left Costa in the lead with a score of 40-36. Throughout the match, seniors Mishra and Whitney Marsh played “The Voice,” a Comedy Sportz player who introduces each player and announces the score after every round.

“I loved seeing Costa Comedy Sportz on display against another team, which probably practices and prepares differently than we do,” said Mishra. “The jokes and humor during this match were top-notch, and it made me so hap- py to hear the audience enjoyed it as much as we did.”
