The new film, “Anyone But You,” is an enjoyable, light-hearted comedic adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, “Much Ado About Nothing.”

The film begins when Bea and Ben meet one another, quickly with a presumably good start leading to a relationship. Due to a misunderstanding between both parties, they end up drifting apart and growing to hate one another. Later, they end up coincidentally seeing each other again at a bar when Ben’s friend and Bea’s sister invited them both to the same destination wedding. As the storyline continues, sparks fly and romance rekindles between these two.

“Anyone But You” was directed by Will Gluck and starred Sydney Sweeney as Bea; Glen Powell as Ben; and Alexandra Shipp as Claudia. The film received immense attention on social media platforms and is one of the most popular films currently playing making a box office profit of $101.4 million worldwide.

The casting is the major strength within this film, with Powell’s charismatic personality complimenting Sweeney’s acting to create an entertaining and comical duo. The two stars made the film enjoyable, giving audiences a good laugh.

By releasing the film during the holiday season, viewers got a taste of the warmth of summer and its possible romances.

In spite of the cast and amusing writing, the storyline was repetitive. The “enemies to lovers” trope is a type of rom-com that has been over-made for years starting with Shakespeare. The only downside to this is the predictable ending, which offered no nuance to the love story. The writers, Illana Wolpert and Will Gluck, were not seeking originality in this adaptation, but were able to pull off the story by getting modern, popular actors to star in the film.

“Anyone But You” was released on Dec. 22 and is playing in theaters.
