Based on the 2004 film, “Mean Girls” is back in theaters with a new musical version. The ear-shredding songs and lack of resemblance to the original film makes for an underwhelming viewing experience for audiences.

The original 2004 teen comedy, written by Tina Fey, has become iconic since its release. The film’s popularity lead to a broadway adaptation of the film that was considerably successful. However, version is disappointing with its lack of humor, leaving out key lines from the original film.

“Mean Girls” follows Cady Heron, who had previously been homeschooled by her parents in Kenya before moving to a public high school in the U.S. where she is befriended by Janis and Damian, two outcasts at the school. The characters are wildly loved but ruined in this new version. At school, Cady then meets a group of girls, Karen, Regina, and Gretchen, more popularly known as The Plastics. Regina George, the leader of The Plastics, invites Cady to have lunch with them and join their clique. Regina and Janis have a fraught history, giving Janis the idea to use Cady to ruin Regina’s life. As the film progresses, Cady slowly loses herself to The Plastics, betraying Janis in the process.

Directed by Samantha Jayne and Arutro Perez Jr., “Mean Girls,” stars Renee Rap as Regina George, Avantika Vandanapu as Karen Shetty, Bebe Wood as Gretchen Weiners and Angourie Rice as Cady Heron. Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels produced the film.

After immense fan anticipation from fans at the news of a recreation of this legendary movie, the long-awaited spin-off to the film “Mean Girls” was released on Jan. 12. Unfortunately, the film scenes that make the audience cringe has few redeeming aspects and the remake is similar to the first, but it lacks beloved moments from the original.

The iconic Halloween party is made terrible with dancing and singing. Songs were performed with the help of singers who only sound decent with the help of autotune.

“Mean Girls” is a disgrace to the 2004 classic that many fans have spent two decades loving. This film tries tries too hard to appeal to Generation Z, with scenes of the characters making Tik Toks and wearing trendy outfits.

“Mean Girls” would be most suited for tweens and up, but overall is a family friendly film. This original film has an amazing plot, but the new cast and singing ruins an iconic film.

The cast, costume choices, plot changes, and lack of humor and integrity to the original film makes this movie not worthwhile of viewers’ time.

“Mean Girls” is a comedic movie  musical that is rated PG-13. The film is currently available for viewing only in theaters and on YouTube.
