Girls lacrosse lost in overtime against Marlborough High School, 11-10. The game took place at Marlborough on Wednesday, May 8th. The Mustangs came into the game as the ninth-best team in California, playing against the second-best team. Costa previously played Marlborough in the 2022 CIF championship where they lost 10-8.

The Mustangs went back and forth with Marlborough but could not capitalize on opportunities in the late game. According to junior midfielder, Kate Donnelley, it was a very disappointing end to the season.

“This wasn’t the outcome we wanted and we had so many opportunities to take advantage of the game,” Donnelley said. “It sucks that our season had to end in an overtime loss but I am proud of the way our team performed the whole season.”

The Mustangs started the game strong with a goal from Donnelley to give the Mustangs an early lead. However, the rest of the half was a back-and-forth game between the two teams, ending with a tie. According to Donnelley, the team was happy with their performance in the first half.

“We felt good going into halftime,” Donnelley said. “We were getting good looks on offense and we felt like we had a good chance to take control of the game in the second half if we could fix some small problems.”

Marlborough came out of halftime with a better gameplan than the Mustangs which gave them the advantage at the start of the second half. With another goal by Donnelly, the Mustangs were able to stay in the game. After a winner couldn’t be decided in regulation, the game went to overtime. The Mustangs committed a penalty and gave Marlborough a free shot to win the game. Marlborough capitalized on the opportunity and won the game 11-10. According to Donnelley, the game didn’t end the way they wanted but it set them up for next season.

“It sucks to lose like this and, sadly, this was the seniors’ last game,” Donnelley said. “There were so many things we could’ve done before and during the game that might have changed the game. However, this was the furthest we have ever made it in Division One playoffs, and next year we are confident we will have more success.”
